H. 890/S. 1650 would update our state's very successful Bottle Bill by including beverages such as bottled water, sports drinks, tea, and juice that were not widely available in 1983 when the Bottle Bill was enacted. These drinks now constitute a large part of the beverage market and, since they are not covered by the Bottle Bill, the containers they are sold in often end up as litter or in landfills. Including them in the Bottle Bill will result in recovery and reuse of 80% of these containers, reducing the burden on both municipal budgets and the environment.
